Bio

Mark Kaufman is a partner at Vivitiv, providing creative services for organizations involved in housing, technology issues, education, the environment, healthcare, the arts, and more. His illustrations have appeared in The New York Times, The Progressive, National Lampoon, The Stranger, Seattle Metropolitan, Willamette Week, Veer, and The Oxford American. Week in week out Mr. Kaufman writes and draws the comic strip American Affairs Desk.

Mr. Kaufman has 30 years experience in design, advertising and illustration. Before moving to Seattle in 1990, Mark worked at design firms and advertising agencies in New York and New Jersey including Miller + Pagani, and Donahue & Associates. Upon arriving in Seattle he was senior designer at Ilium Associates and Becker Design working on projects for clients such as SAFECO, Washington Mutual, LADOT , Microsoft, Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) and Trammell Crow. Mr. Kaufman joined Vivitiv as a partner in 1993. Recent design projects include work for, King County Housing Authority, Waste Management, Verity Credit Union, Technology Alliance, Seattle Repertory Theatre and the City of Bellevue.

He has been awarded certificates of merit from Print Magazine, the Society of Illustrators, Graphic Design USA, American Corporate Identity, and the Art Directors Club of New Jersey. Mr. Kaufman’s design work has appeared in Critique Magazine and he was featured in the book Thinking Creatively by Robin Landa. Mr. Kaufman’s illustration work has been included in the books The Best of LCD: The Art and Writing of WFMU, from Princeton Architectural Press, Graphic Artist Guild News, Big Book of Green Design and Creativity Magazine. Mr. Kaufman and business partner Jacqueline McCarthy are profiled in the May 2008 issue of Step Inside Design Magazine, and recent interviews include conversations with Design Taxi, and Escape From Illustration Island.

Mr. Kaufman has served on the executive board of AIGA Seattle, The Seattle Show, as co-chair of AIGA Seattle Design Camp, and was a jurist at Creativity 38. He currently serves as a committee member for Into the Woods design conference. He is also a member of the Graphic Artists Guild, the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce and the Washington Recycling Association. Mr. Kaufman attended the School of Visual Arts in New York city from 1978-1983, where he studied graphic design and advertising.
